BA, BF and FG Falcon and Territory rear wheel bearings: bearing kit or hub and bearing kit?

BA, BF and FG Falcon and Territory rear wheel bearings: bearing kit or hub and bearing kit?

A BA, BF or FG Falcon with independent rear suspension (IRS) takes one 42 x 78 x 45 mm rear wheel bearing per wheel, per our IRS rear wheel bearing kit listing. Our IRS rear hub and wheel bearing kit adds a new hub. Both list SX and SY Territories and the engines below.

Find your series and engine in the table. Both kits list the same cars, so the choice is whether your old hub goes back in.

Every row takes either the IRS rear wheel bearing kit (pn230) or the IRS rear hub and wheel bearing kit (pn463). Source: the "Fits" lists of our four IRS rear listings (pn230, pn232, pn463 and pn464), which are word for word the same, read 5 October 2026. Each row spans several lines of the list; check your exact engine on the listing. One Fairmont BF II line runs to Jun 2009, later than the others; if your Fairmont was built after Apr 2008, send us your VIN. None of the four states ABS or a body style, and none names a ute. Each single kit does one wheel, left or right.

Same cars, different contents: what's in each kit

With one fit list across all four listings, the car doesn't decide. What's in the box does:

Why does the hub matter? A sealed wheel bearing without a flange is a "generation 1" bearing. On a driven axle, with most of them, the outer ring is pressed into the axle carrier, and the wheel hub is a press fit in the inner ring. Bearing makers also say to check the bearing seat on the axle carrier and clean it before assembly.

Falcon owners on an owners' forum describe the BA's IRS rear in similar terms: the hub and bearing are pressed into the rear upright, and the bearings come out with a big press (owner experience, not a Ford procedure). Our listing gives the bearing's size, not its type. With the bearing-only kit, your old hub goes back in; with the hub kit, a new hub goes in instead. In bearing makers' generic fitting steps, the bearing is pressed in by its outer ring, and when the hub is pressed in, the inner ring must be supported with a thrust piece.

Two checks before you order

  1. Confirm your car has IRS. Both kits say "with IRS". If one solid axle housing runs across the back from wheel to wheel, it's a live axle, not IRS, and these kits aren't the ones.
  2. Check for ABS. Our IRS listings don't say whether the bearing carries an ABS encoder. The ABS speed signal often comes from a magnetic encoder in the wheel bearing's seal, but on some cars the encoder sits on the drive shaft or in the hub instead. If you're not sure of the fit, send us your VIN or registration and we'll confirm it from the make, model, year and engine.

When to get a mechanic

A pressed-in bearing needs a press. Remove tightly fitted bearings with a properly guarded press or bearing puller, and wear safety glasses: bearing makers warn never to cut the inner ring, which can shatter.

Bearing makers say to use the vehicle maker's tightening torque so the bearing clearance is set correctly, and to install hub assemblies with a calibrated torque wrench, not an impact wrench. We don't publish torque figures: for the Falcon or Territory figure, use Ford's workshop manual. If you don't have the manual, a torque wrench and a press, book a mechanic. Our listings say the parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications", and we agree.

Not on the list: AU, utes, wagons, SZ Territory and fronts

  • AU Falcon with IRS: our AU IRS rear wheel bearing is listed for the AU, AU II and AU III Falcon and Fairmont and the AU and AU II Fairlane and LTD with IRS.
  • AU Falcon without IRS, and EA to EL: our Japanese rear wheel bearing kit for Falcon and Commodore lists the AU and EL Falcon, the EA to EL Fairmont and others, and says it does not suit any model with IRS.
  • BA, BF or FG ute, or a wagon: none of our listings names one. If yours has a solid rear axle, send us your VIN.
  • SZ Territory: not on our fit list. Send us your VIN.

BA and FG Falcon stud pattern

Our hub types and stud pattern guide has the chart. We haven't found a Ford document that lists the Falcon's PCD by model. An axle maker's trailer hub stud chart has one row labelled "Ford", 5 x 4.5" with 1/2" UNF studs. Check the stud size on the car itself before you buy wheels or nuts.

Which Bearings Express kit fits

More kits are in wheel bearing kits and hub units.

Questions people also ask

Does the Territory take the same rear wheel bearing as the Falcon?

In our listings, yes: the same IRS rear kits list the BA to FG X Falcon and the SX, SY and SY II Territory. The SZ Territory isn't on the list.

Do you have front wheel bearings for a BA, BF or FG Falcon?

Not in our current listings. Our Falcon front kits are listed for the EA to EL Falcon and the XG and XH ute, so send us your VIN for a BA to FG front.
