Commodore rear wheel bearings by model: VN to VZ with IRS, the VY and VZ Crewman, and VE and VF

Commodore rear wheel bearings by model: VN to VZ with IRS, the VY and VZ Crewman, and VE and VF

A VY or VZ Commodore with independent rear suspension (IRS) takes our IRS rear wheel bearing, listed for the VN to VZ Commodore and HSV with IRS, 1988 to 2007, one per wheel. A VY or VZ Crewman or One Tonner takes our Crewman and One Tonner rear kit instead, and the VE and VF take a third kit.

Find your car in the table. The rear suspension and the body pick the kit, not just the series letters.

Source: our product listings' "Fits" lists, read 6 October 2026. Each row sums up several lines, so check your engine on the listing: the IRS listing names V6 3.6L and 3.8L and V8 5.0L, 5.7L and 6.0L, but its Calais line names only the 3.6L V6. One Crewman VZ V6 line runs to 2007; if yours is a 2007 build, send us your VIN. Our IRS listing names the Adventra and the HSV VY and VZ with IRS, while the Crewman kit names the HSV Avalanche and Avalanche XUV. If you have an Adventra or an Avalanche, send us your VIN.

The VY and VZ take two different rear kits

"VY rear wheel bearing" isn't enough to order on. In our listings, a VY or VZ Commodore with IRS shares one bearing with the VN to VX Commodore with IRS. A VY or VZ Crewman or One Tonner is on a separate kit, and that kit's listing doesn't mention IRS. The 2-door VY and VZ Commodore ute isn't named on either.

The VN to VS cars split the same way. With IRS, they take the IRS bearing. Without IRS and with rear disc brakes, they take the Japanese rear wheel bearing kit, whose listing says it does not suit any model with IRS. Of these Commodore rear kits, it's the only one whose listing gives its contents: an inner and an outer cup-and-cone bearing, a locking collar and a seal. The IRS, Crewman and VE and VF listings give neither the contents nor a bearing size, so order from the fit list.

The VN to VZ IRS bearing comes in two listings with the same fit list: one with ACCOR bearings, and one with ITJ bearings made in Japan.

Three checks before you order

  1. Check the body first, whatever the rear suspension. A Crewman or One Tonner takes the Crewman kit, not the IRS bearing. For an Adventra or an HSV Avalanche, send us your VIN.
  2. Confirm whether your car has IRS. If one solid axle housing runs across the back from wheel to wheel, it's a live axle, not IRS.
  3. On a VB to VS without IRS, check for rear disc brakes. The Japanese kit's listing says "with rear disc brake".

If you're still not sure, send us your VIN or registration and we'll confirm it from the make, model, year and engine.

When to get a mechanic

A tight-fitting bearing needs a press or a puller. Remove tightly fitted bearings with a properly guarded press or bearing puller, and wear safety glasses: bearing makers warn never to cut the inner ring, which can shatter. In bearing makers' generic fitting steps for a sealed wheel bearing without a flange, the bearing is normally pressed in by its outer ring, and when a hub is pressed into the inner ring, the inner ring must be supported with a thrust piece. Our listings don't say which type each Commodore kit is, so follow Holden's workshop manual for yours.

Bearing makers say to use the vehicle maker's tightening torque so the bearing clearance is set correctly, and to install hub assemblies with a calibrated torque wrench, not an impact wrench. We don't publish torque figures: for your Commodore's figure, use Holden's workshop manual. If you don't have the manual, a torque wrench and a press, book a mechanic. Our listings say the parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications", and we agree.

Questions people also ask

Is a VY rear wheel bearing the same as a VZ or VX?

With IRS, yes in our listings: one IRS bearing lists the Commodore VN, VP, VR, VS, VT, VX, VY and VZ with IRS.

Does the VE rear wheel bearing fit a VF?

Yes in our listings. One kit lists the VE and VF sedan, Sportwagon and ute, with V6 and V8 engines.

Is the VZ ute rear wheel bearing the same as the sedan?

Not always. The VZ Crewman, a 4-door ute, takes the Crewman kit. The 2-door VY and VZ ute isn't named in our listings, so send us your VIN. On the VE and VF, the ute and sedan share one kit.

Do you have front wheel bearings for a VY, VZ or VE Commodore?

Not in our current listings. Our Commodore front kits are listed for the VB to VP (and the HQ to WB), with LM67048 and LM11949 tapered bearings, so send us your VIN for a VR or later front.
