Fan belts and drive belts: what 6PK1230 means, and which belt fits your car

Fan belts and drive belts: what 6PK1230 means, and which belt fits your car

A fan belt, or drive belt, turns the engine's alternator, air-con compressor and power steering pump, and a ribbed one is sold by a number like 6PK1230: 6 ribs, the PK rib profile and a 1230 mm effective length. Most belts in our automotive range are ribbed; some kits use three or four V-belts instead.

Got the number off your old belt? Match it and you're done. No number? Find your vehicle in the table below.

In 6PK1230 What it means Why it matters
6 Number of ribs Count the ribs on the old belt. Our ribbed belts run from 4PK to 9PK
PK Rib profile PK ribs are 3.56 mm apart and the belt is about 4.6 mm thick
1230 Effective length in millimetres The length the belt is sold by. Go by the number, not a tape measure
13A1005, 11A1005 Not ribbed: an automotive V-belt section (13A, 11A) and its size Order these by the whole number, as listed on the kit

What does a fan belt do?

It drives the engine's accessories. A ribbed (poly-V) belt can snake around every pulley at once, and on some engines it turns the water pump too: our 6PK1995 belt is listed for the LS1 V8 as the alternator, power steering and water pump belt.

Other engines split the work. Our kit for the 2006 to 2011 Ranger and BT-50 is three V-belts: two alternator belts and one air-conditioning belt. Most of our multi-belt kit listings say which belt does which job.

How to find the right fan belt

  1. Read the number on your old belt. Where you can, our team goes by the maker's belt number rather than measuring.
  2. Check the rib count. A 7PK1515 is a different belt to a 6PK1515, even at the same length.
  3. No number? Find your vehicle in the table below. Each kit lists its belt numbers, so you can check them against what's on the car.
  4. Still not sure? Send us the old belt number, or your make, model, year and engine, or your VIN or registration, and we'll confirm the belt.

Source: our product listings' "Fits" lists, read 8 October 2026. Each row sums up several lines, so check your model code and engine on the listing. Our Hiace and Hilux belt's title mentions the 1KD, but its fit list names the 1KD only for the Hiace; for a 1KD Hilux, the 7PK1515 is the listed belt. On a VZ with the 5.7 LS1, two of our listings carry a VIN note (L491217) on some lines and one doesn't, so send us your VIN.

We also list kits for the Nissan Patrol GQ and GU, Navara D40 and Pathfinder, and single ribbed belts for many other makes, in automotive belts. Isuzu D-Max or Holden Colorado? See our D-Max and Colorado fan belt sizes.

Not in our range: none of our fan belt listings names the Ranger PX or BT-50 diesels from late 2011, the Toyota 1GD or 2GD diesels, or the 1HZ in the 78 and 79 series. Send us the old belt number and we'll check.

Drive belt vs timing belt

They're different belts doing different jobs. The fan or drive belt runs the accessories on the outside of the engine. A timing belt has teeth and keeps the camshafts (and on some engines the balance shafts) in step with the engine. We sell timing belts as timing belt kits: see our Subaru EJ20 and EJ25 and Hyundai Getz and Accent guides.

Fan belt squeal, noise and wear: what the signs mean

What you see or hear Causes belt makers list What to do
Belt noise (squeal) Tension too low, or the belt has reached the end of its life Re-tension or change the belt
Hard, shiny (glazed) rib sides Wrong tension when fitted, or cords damaged during fitting Change the belt and set the correct tension
Cracks or pieces missing from the ribs Tension too low or too high, end of life, or something caught in the drive Change the belt
Uneven wear across the ribs Pulleys out of line, or strong belt vibration Check and align the pulleys, and check the tension; change the belt
Oil or coolant on the belt A leak in the engine bay Fix the leak, change the belt
Breaks soon after fitting Cords damaged during fitting, or tension too high Change the belt and fit it correctly
Worn pulley (play in its bearing, damaged running surface) A faulty tension or idler pulley Replace that pulley

How long does a fan belt last, and when should you replace it?

There isn't one figure for every car: check your service book for your vehicle's interval. Replace the belt sooner if you see any of the signs above.

Look at the pulleys too. Belt makers point out that a worn belt often isn't the only worn part, and that if one component in the drive is faulty, the others should be replaced too. Our idler pulley vs tensioner pulley guide explains which pulley does what.

Belt makers warn to fit drive belts with the proper tools and minimal force, never by levering them on with a screwdriver or bar, and to follow the vehicle maker's installation instructions. If you don't have those instructions and the tools, book a mechanic. Our listings say the parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications".

Questions people also ask

Is a fan belt the same as a drive belt?

Yes. Fan belt, drive belt, alternator belt and accessory belt are names for the belt that drives the accessories. Our listings call a single ribbed one a "multi accessory belt".

What happens if the drive belt breaks?

Everything it drives stops turning. On a single-belt engine that can be the alternator, power steering and air-con at once, and on some engines the water pump.

Do you sell ride-on mower drive belts?

Yes, but they're V-belts, not car fan belts. Start with our Kevlar mower belt guide.
