Holden or Ford trailer bearings? How to tell

To tell Holden from Ford trailer bearings, read the number on the inner cone: LM67048 is Holden (31.75 mm bore) and L68149 is Ford, also called slimline (34.99 mm bore). No readable number? Measure the bearing seat on the stub axle. We sell both: the Holden LM67048/LM11949 kit and the Ford L68149/LM12749 kit.

If you can read LM67048 or L68149 on your old inner cone, that tells you the inner bearing. Check the outer cone and the cup numbers too (steps 1 and 2), then use the table.

Why the hub and studs can't tell you

Look at the two cup rows. A Holden inner cup and a Ford inner cup have the same outside diameter, and so do the two outer cups. Both take the same hub housing, 59.10 mm inner and 45.20 mm outer, and the same DC1 grease cap. So a Holden hub and a Ford hub can be the same casting from the outside.

The difference is on the inside: the cones, and the grease seals that ride on the axle. The Ford inner cone bore is about 3.2 mm bigger than the Holden one, and the Ford outer about 2.9 mm bigger. That means the stub axle decides the bearings. AL-KO's own stub axle range is sold that way: each stub is listed with its bearing type (LM or SL), and the hub bores are the same for both.

Because Holden and Ford cups fit the same hub bores, a hub drilled with a Ford stud pattern (1/2" studs) can just as easily hold Holden bearings. Counting or measuring studs won't settle it.

How to tell which bearings your trailer has

  1. Read the number. With the hub off, wipe the grease off the large end face of the inner cone and look for the stamped number. LM67048 means Holden, L68149 means Ford. The cup (the outer race left in the hub) is stamped too: LM67010 is Holden, L68110 is Ford. If the cup reads L68111 instead of L68110, it's a larger cup (59.97 mm outside diameter) and a standard Ford kit won't fit. Read the inner cone, the one nearer the vehicle: LM67048 is also the outer cone on the 1.5 tonne set (with an LM29749 inner).
  2. Check the outer bearing as well. LM11949 is Holden and LM12749 is Ford. Holden inner with Holden outer is the usual pairing, but some trailers have a Holden inner and a Ford outer (a composite axle). If yours does, buy a composite kit.
  3. No readable number? Measure. Use vernier callipers across the inner bearing seat on the stub axle, or across the bore of the old inner cone. About 31.75 mm is Holden. About 35 mm is Ford. Do the same on the outer seat: about 19 mm is Holden and about 22 mm is Ford.
  4. Use the axle size only as a rough guide. AL-KO's stub axle range pairs 39 mm round and 40 mm square stubs with LM (Holden) bearings and 45 mm round stubs with SL (Ford). Its 45 mm square stubs take LM marine or 1.5 tonne bearings, so a 45 mm square axle is not a sure sign of Ford. Axles get changed and stubs get welded on, so confirm with step 1 or 3 before you order.

When to get a mechanic

Stop and get a mechanic or trailer workshop to look at it if the bearing seat on the stub is blue, scored or worn, or if the cup in the hub is pitted or flaking. Do the same if your measurement falls between the two sizes, or if you aren't sure how to reassemble and adjust the hub. Most of our kit listings say all parts should be fitted by a licensed professional to vehicle specifications.

Which kit fits

Every kit below comes with cups and cones for the inner and outer bearing, plus seals.

More kits, including single, marine and KOYO versions, are in the trailer bearing collection.

Questions people also ask

Is LM11949 Holden or Ford?

LM11949 is the Holden outer bearing cone, with a 19.05 mm (3/4") bore. It pairs with the LM67048 inner cone.

Is LM12749 Holden or Ford?

LM12749 is the Ford (slimline) outer cone, with a 21.99 mm bore. It normally pairs with an L68149 inner, but composite kits pair it with a Holden LM67048 inner.

Can I tell Holden or Ford from the stud pattern on the trailer?

No. Holden and Ford bearing cups fit the same hub bores, so the stud pattern drilled in the hub doesn't tell you which bearings are inside. Read the bearing number or measure the axle.

Are Holden and Ford trailer bearings interchangeable?

No. The cups fit the same hub bores, but the cones are sized for different axles: 31.75 mm against 34.99 mm on the inner. Fit the kit that matches the numbers or the measurement.

What is a slimline trailer bearing?

Slimline, SL and Ford all mean the same set: L68149 inner and LM12749 outer.

What size axle takes Holden bearings?

AL-KO's stub axle range pairs 39 mm round and 40 mm square stubs with Holden (LM) bearings, and 45 mm round stubs with Ford (SL). Its 45 mm square stubs take Holden (LM) marine or 1.5 tonne bearings. Treat this as a guide and confirm with the bearing number.
