Trailer bearing sizes: Holden, Ford and the other Australian kits

Trailer wheel bearing kits

The two most common trailer bearing kits in Australia are Holden (LM67048 inner cone, 31.75 mm bore, with LM11949 outer, 19.05 mm) and Ford, also called slimline (L68149 inner, 34.99 mm, with LM12749 outer, 21.99 mm). The stub axle decides which you need, not the studs. We sell both, as the 2x Holden kit and the 2x Ford kit.

If you can read the number on your old inner cone, find it in the chart below and you're done.

Holden trailer bearing sizes

  • Inner bearing: cone LM67048, cup LM67010. Bore 31.75 mm (1 1/4"), cup outside diameter 59.13 mm.
  • Outer bearing: cone LM11949, cup LM11910. Bore 19.05 mm (3/4"), cup outside diameter 45.24 mm.
  • Written as: LM67048/10 and LM11949/10.
  • Typical axle: AL-KO fits LM bearings to its 39 mm round and 40 mm square stub axles, and LM marine bearings to its 45 mm square stubs.

Ford trailer bearing sizes

  • Inner bearing: cone L68149, cup L68110. Bore 34.99 mm (1.3775"), cup outside diameter 59.13 mm.
  • Outer bearing: cone LM12749, cup LM12710. Bore 21.99 mm (0.8656"), cup outside diameter 45.24 mm.
  • Written as: L68149/10 and LM12749/10.
  • Typical axle: AL-KO fits SL (slimline) bearings to its 45 mm round stub axles.

The axle decides the kit, not the stud size

Look at the cup sizes: a Holden cup and a Ford cup have the same outside diameter, inner and outer. Both sets fit the same hub bores, 59.10 mm inner and 45.20 mm outer, and take the same DC1 grease cap. So a Holden hub and a Ford hub can look identical, whatever studs they carry.

What differs is the cone bore, which has to match the stub axle. AL-KO sells each stub axle with its bearing type (LM, SL, parallel, 1.5T, 2T, 3.0T). That's why the bearings follow the axle, and why a Ford-pattern hub can hold Holden bearings. The step-by-step check is in Holden or Ford trailer bearings? How to tell.

How to tell which bearings your trailer has

  1. Read the number on the inner cone. Wipe the grease off the cone face. LM67048 is Holden, L68149 is Ford.
  2. Read the outer cone and both cups. A matching outer (LM11949 or LM12749) confirms the set. Anything else, find it in the combinations table below.
  3. No number? Measure the stub axle. Put vernier callipers across the inner bearing seat: about 31.75 mm is Holden, about 35 mm is Ford.
  4. Count the wheels. A 2x kit does two wheels. A single kit does one hub.

Get a trailer workshop or mechanic to look at it if a hub ran hot, the bearing grinds or has play, the cup is pitted, or the axle seat is scored or blue. Most of our kit listings say all parts should be fitted by a licensed professional to vehicle specifications.

Other trailer bearing combinations

Holden and Ford are the most common kits, but they aren't the only ones. These are the other pairs we come across, with sizes checked against the bearing makers' published data.

A common trap is the L68149/11. The cone is the same L68149 as a Ford kit, but it sits in an L68111 cup, 59.97 mm across instead of 59.13 mm. A standard Ford kit won't fit that hub, no matter how hard you try. And 25580 is not 25590: both use the 25520 cup, but the cone bores differ by about 1.2 mm.

Trailer bearing part numbers decoded

A tapered roller bearing is two parts: the cone (the inner ring with the rollers) and the cup (the outer race pressed into the hub). Each has its own number. The shorthand "/10" means the cup that shares the cone's number stem: LM67048/10 is cone LM67048 with cup LM67010. Likewise 15123/245 is cone 15123 with cup 15245, and 25580/20 is cone 25580 with cup 25520.

Two numbers catch people out. 15123 and LM67048 have the same 31.75 mm bore, but their cups differ (62.00 mm against 59.13 mm), so they don't swap. And LM29710 and LM48510 cups are the same size, but their cones are not.

Load ratings belong to the axle, not the bearing kit

The "1.5 tonne", "2 tonne" or "3 tonne" in a kit's name is not a load rating, and you'll see different figures quoted for the same bearings. An axle maker's stub axle list shows why: it rates the axle, and the same LM bearings appear on axles with different ratings. We don't quote load ratings for bearings or kits. Fit new bearings with the same numbers as the ones that came out, and if you need your trailer's rating, ask the trailer or axle maker.

Standard or marine trailer bearing kit?

Caravans and box trailers generally take a standard kit. Boat, jet ski and other trailers that go in the water take a marine kit. In our marine kits the cones and cups are the same as in the standard kit; the seal is the difference. One axle maker's catalogue lists two-piece marine seals for LM and SL. It's fine to use a marine seal on a road trailer, and we recommend marine seals on anything that goes in the water.

Which kit fits

Every kit below includes the inner and outer cones and cups, plus seals.

Single, KOYO and dust cap versions of most of these are in the trailer bearing collection.

Questions people also ask

What are the types of trailer bearings?

Trailer wheel bearings are tapered roller bearings: a cone with rollers that sits in a cup. Most trailers have a bigger inner and a smaller outer bearing on a stepped axle. A parallel axle uses the same bearing on both sides.

Is LM12749 Holden or Ford?

LM12749 is the Ford (slimline) outer cone, 21.99 mm bore. It usually pairs with an L68149 inner, but composite kits pair it with a Holden LM67048 inner.

Is LM11949 Holden or Ford?

LM11949 is the Holden outer cone, 19.05 mm (3/4") bore. It pairs with the LM67048 inner cone.

Do Ford and Holden trailer bearings share the same hub bore?

Yes. Both fit the same hub bores, 59.10 mm inner and 45.20 mm outer. The cones differ, so the bearings still aren't interchangeable on the axle.

If I use a Ford hub on a Holden axle, which bearings do I need?

Holden bearings. The bearing cones have to fit the axle, and Holden and Ford cups both fit the same hub bores.
