Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero timing belt kits: which kit fits your 6G72 or 4D56

Our Triton timing belt kits split by engine code: the 4D56T kit for the 2.5 diesel ML and MN (2008 to 2015), the 6G72 24-valve kit for the MK V6 (1996 to 2006), and the 6G72 12-valve kit for the MH and MJ Triton and NF to NK Pajero (1988 to 1997). Some add a hydraulic tensioner or water pump.

The engine code picks the kit, not the badge

Four things catch Triton and Pajero owners out:

• The 6G72 is on two kit families. The 12-valve 6G72 in the MH and MJ Triton and the NF to NK Pajero takes one kit; the 24-valve 6G72 in the MK Triton takes another. In our listings the MJ ends in October 1996 and the MK starts in October 1996, so check the series, not just the year.
• An MN Triton isn't always the diesel. Our timing belt kits list the ML and MN Triton only with the 2.5 litre 4D56T turbo diesel. Our Triton service kit listings also give the ML and MN with the 2.4 litre 4G64, and the ML with the 3.2 diesel (4M41) and 3.5 V6 (6G74). None of our timing belt kits lists those engines.
• Our Pajero kits stop at the NK. No timing belt kit of ours lists a Pajero after July 1997. Our other listings also give the NJ and NK Pajero with the 3.5 V6 (6G74) and the 2.8 diesel (4M40); none of our timing belt kits lists those engines. Our fan belt and service kit listings give the NM to NX Pajero as the 3.2 diesel (4M41), and the Pajero Sport QE and QF as the 2.4 diesel (4N15).
• The Delica is on both 6G72 kit families. Our 12-valve timing belt kit (the one without a water pump) and our 24-valve kits all name the PD6W and PF6W Delica imports, with overlapping years, so we've left it out of the table. Send us your VIN before ordering.

For a 24-valve kit with a water pump, ask us. We don't list a water pump version of the 4D56T kit, or a hydraulic tensioner version of the 12-valve kit.

Our team recommends replacing all the components when the timing belt is done, though many buyers keep the old tensioner to save cost. If the combination you want isn't listed, ask us about a hydraulic tensioner or water pump kit.

Does a Triton or Pajero have a timing belt or a chain?

The engines our timing belt kits list have a timing belt: the 6G72 V6 (12-valve and 24-valve) and the 4D56T diesel.

For the other engines above (4G64, 4M41, 6G74 and 4N15) we have no timing belt kit, so we can't answer from our listings. Mitsubishi Australia's 2016 schedule for the MQ Triton lists a timing belt replacement for the 4G6 petrol engine only, and none for the 4N1 diesel. For anything else, ask a Mitsubishi dealer with your VIN.

How often should the timing belt be replaced?

Use the interval in your vehicle's own service book or owner's manual. Mitsubishi Australia's online Triton and Pajero maintenance schedules start at the 2016 model year, later than every vehicle our kits list, so we don't quote a figure for these engines.

Get a mechanic to fit the kit unless you have Mitsubishi's workshop manual and the tools it calls for, including for setting the tensioner. Our listings say all parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications".

Which Bearings Express kit fits

For a 2.5 turbo diesel (4D56T) ML or MN Triton, or PB or PC Challenger:

• Pick the timing belt kit for Challenger and Triton ML, MN if you're keeping the hydraulic tensioner.
• Pick the timing belt kit with hydraulic tensioner if the tensioner is being replaced too.

For a 3.0 V6 24-valve (6G72) MK Triton, PA Challenger, TE to TJ Magna or WA Starwagon:

• Pick the timing belt kit for Triton MK if you're keeping the hydraulic tensioner and water pump.
• Pick the timing belt kit with hydraulic tensioner for Triton MK if the tensioner is being replaced too.

For a 3.0 V6 12-valve (6G72) NF to NK Pajero, MH or MJ Triton, TR or TS Magna, or KR or KS Verada:

• Pick the timing belt kit for Pajero and Triton if you're keeping the water pump.
• Pick the water pump and timing belt kit if the pump is being replaced too.

How much does a Mitsubishi Triton timing belt replacement cost?

We can't quote workshop labour. Each kit's price is on its listing, and a workshop can quote the fitting.

Is it a genuine Mitsubishi timing belt kit?

No. Our kits are aftermarket: GMB kits for the 4D56T and 24-valve 6G72, and GBC kits for the 12-valve 6G72. GMB bearings are made in Japan, our team confirms.

Do you sell a 6G72 water pump?

Only in a kit. For the 12-valve 6G72 it's the water pump and timing belt kit. For the 24-valve 6G72, ask us: water pump kits are available on request.
