Parallel trailer bearings explained: L68149/L68110 vs 25590/25520

Parallel trailer bearings are the same size on the inside and outside of the hub, and in Australia they're usually either L68149/L68110 (34.99 mm bore, the Ford inner bearing used twice) or the much larger 25590/25520 (45.62 mm bore, which our kit listings say fits various MDC camper trailers). We sell both, as the L68149/L68110 parallel kit and the 25590/25520 parallel kit.

If you already know your part number, you can stop here and pick the kit below. If you don't, the table and the steps after it will tell you which set you have.

"Parallel" means two different kits in Australia

A standard trailer stub axle is tapered: a big bearing on the inside, a small one on the outside. A parallel axle is straight, so the same bearing sits on both sides.

The catch is that two quite different bearings get sold under the same word.

  • L68149/L68110 is the set AL-KO lists as its parallel bearing: the L68149 cone and L68110 cup in both the inner and outer position. It's the same cone and cup as the inner bearing of a Ford slimline kit, just used twice.
  • 25590/25520 is much bigger. Its bore is about 10.6 mm larger and its cup is almost 24 mm wider across. Our 25590/25520 kits come with a 55 x 85 x 12 mm seal and are described as fitting various MDC camper trailers.

One more trap: 25590 is not 25580. Both cones use the same 25520 cup, but the 25580 has a 44.450 mm (1 3/4 in) bore and the 25590 a 45.618 mm bore. A 25580 cone will drop into a 25520 cup and still not fit a 25590 axle. Read the cone, not just the cup.

How to tell which parallel set you have

Removing a hub means jacking the trailer safely, pulling the split pin, nut and hub, and cleaning off the grease. If you haven't done that before, get a trailer workshop or mechanic to do it.

  1. Read the numbers. Wipe the cone face and the cup edge. You're looking for L68149 and L68110, or 25590 and 25520. The number is the fastest and surest check.
  2. Compare inner and outer. If both cones carry the same number (and the cups match), it's a parallel hub. If the outer cone reads LM12749, it's a standard Ford (slimline) hub with a tapered axle, not parallel. If the inner and outer numbers don't match either kit in the table, stop and check before you order: neither of these kits will fit.
  3. Measure the cone bore if the number is worn off. Use a vernier calliper across the hole in the cone. About 35.0 mm is L68149. About 45.6 mm is 25590. About 44.45 mm (1 3/4 in) is a 25580, which needs a different kit.
  4. Measure the old seal. A 55 x 85 x 12 mm seal points to the 25590/25520 set. The seal in our L68149 road kits is much smaller, listed as 1.68 x 2.32 x 0.37 in.
  5. Count the hubs. Each kit does one hub: an inner bearing, an outer bearing and a seal. Two hubs need a 2x kit, four hubs a 4x kit.

Get a mechanic before you tow if a hub ran hot, the bearing grinds or has play, the cup is pitted, or the axle journal is scored. Our kit descriptions say all parts should be fitted by a licensed professional to vehicle specifications.

Questions people also ask

Are parallel trailer bearings Ford?

The L68149/L68110 set is: it's the Ford inner bearing used on both sides. The 25590/25520 set is a different, larger bearing and isn't a Ford size.

What size is an L68149 bearing?

The L68149/L68110 set is 34.989 mm bore, 59.131 mm outside diameter and 15.875 mm wide (1.3775 x 2.3280 x 0.625 in).

What seal does an L68149 parallel hub take?

Our road kits use the C610/28600 seal, listed as 1.68 x 2.32 x 0.37 in. We also sell a two-piece seal for L68149/10 parallel axles, 402922N, listed as 1.65 x 2.258/2.48 x 0.51 in.

What bearings do MDC campers use?

Our 25590/25520 kit listings say they fit various MDC camper trailers, and they come with a 55 x 85 x 12 mm seal. 25590 is the cone and 25520 the cup. Read the number on your own cones before you order, because models can differ.

What is a parallel bearing trailer axle?

It's a straight stub axle with the same size bearing on the inside and outside of the hub, instead of a large inner and small outer.
