Every Toyota Hilux and Hiace in our timing belt listings is a diesel, and the engine code picks the kit: the 2L, 3L or 5L kit for 1988 to 2005 models, or the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV kit for 2000 to 2019 models. The newer kit also comes with a water pump, a hydraulic tensioner or both.

Source: our product listings (titles and "Fits" lists) for the Toyota timing belt kits, read 6 October 2026. The 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV kit listings don't give a fuel type; our wheel bearing and fan belt listings for the same model codes give both engines as turbo diesels. Rows are merged where the listing gives the same engine code; a semicolon separates date ranges the listing gives separately. Every kit in a family lists exactly the same vehicles. The newer kits' listings also name the Camroad, Regius Ace, Hilux Surf, Hilux Tiger and Hilux Vigo with these two engines.
The engine code picks the kit, not the year or the badge
Three things catch buyers out:
- 2001 to 2005 can go either way. The 5L Hilux runs to April 2005 and the 5L Hiace to February 2005, while our listings give the 2KD-FTV Hiace from 2001 (KLH12R) and 2004 (KDH codes) and the KUN Hilux from 2005. A year alone won't tell you the kit.
- "2.8 Hilux" can mean two engines. In our listings the 2.8 is the 3L, from 1988 to 1997, and it takes the older kit. The 2.8 litre Hilux from 2015 has the 1GD-FTV engine, and none of our timing belt kits lists it.
- "Landcruiser" in the newer kit's title means the Prado. The listing names the Landcruiser Prado with the 1KD-FTV (KDJ120R, KDJ150R, KDJ155R) and no other Landcruiser model.
Two older rows give no engine code: the Dyna LY211 and LY212 and the 4Runner LN130. If you have one of those, or don't know your engine code, send us your VIN or registration and our team will confirm the kit from the make, model, year and engine.
Does a Hilux or Hiace have a timing belt or a chain?
The engines our timing belt kits list have a timing belt: the 2L, 3L and 5L, and the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV.
Some Hilux and Hiace engines aren't on any of our timing belt kits, so we can't answer for them from our listings:
- the 2015-on Hilux 2.8 and 2.4 diesels (1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV, as our Hilux service kit listings give them);
- the 1KZ-TE 3.0 turbo diesel in the 1999 to 2005 Hilux (KZN165R, as our fan belt kit listing gives it);
- the 2.7 litre 2TR-FE and 2.0 litre 1TR-FE (as our 7PK2300 drive belt listing gives them).
For those, ask a Toyota dealer with your VIN.
How often should the timing belt be replaced?
Use the interval in your vehicle's own service book or owner's manual. We couldn't find a Toyota Australia schedule for these engines.
The one Toyota schedule we could read is Toyota New Zealand's current service requirements for diesel vehicles (December 2025). It doesn't name any model, engine or year. It lists "Timing Belt (if applicable)" as a replace item at the 10 year or 150,000 km service, whichever comes first, for normal conditions. For vehicles used often in dusty conditions, it adds: inspect the timing belt and timing pulley for abnormal wear or cracks every 30,000 km, and remove sand or dust from inside the timing belt cover. It's Toyota New Zealand's current schedule, not one written for your model or year, so if your book gives a different interval, follow your book.
Get a mechanic to fit the kit unless you have Toyota's workshop manual and the tools it calls for. Our listings say the parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications".
Which Bearings Express kit fits
For a 1KD-FTV or 2KD-FTV:
- Pick the timing belt kit for Hilux, Hiace, Dyna, Fortuner and Prado (pn1774) if you're keeping the water pump and the hydraulic tensioner. The listing gives a timing belt, GMB bearings and seals.
- Pick the timing belt kit with water pump (pn1775) if the pump is being replaced too. It adds a water pump.
- Pick the timing belt kit with hydraulic tensioner (pn1776) if the tensioner is being replaced but not the pump.
- Pick the timing belt kit with water pump and hydraulic tensioner (pn1777) if both are being replaced.
For a 2L, 3L or 5L:
- Pick the timing belt kit for Hilux, Hiace, Dyna and 4Runner (pn321) if you're keeping the water pump. The listing gives GMB bearings, high-temperature seals and a GMB belt.
- Pick the timing belt and water pump kit for Hilux, Hiace, Dyna and 4Runner (pn324) if the pump is being replaced too. It adds a GMB water pump.
We don't list a hydraulic tensioner version for the 2L, 3L and 5L. Kits for other Toyota engines are in timing belts and kits, including the Camry: our listings put the 2.0 and 2.2 four-cylinder Camry (3S-FE, 3S-FC and 5S-FE, May 1987 to August 2002) on one kit family and the 3.0 V6 Camry (1MZ-FE, MCV20R and MCV36R, August 1997 to June 2006) on another, so a 1997 to 2002 Camry also needs its engine code.
Questions people also ask
How much does a Toyota Hilux timing belt replacement cost?
We can't quote workshop labour. Each kit's price is on its listing, and a workshop can quote the fitting.
Is it a genuine Toyota timing belt kit?
No. Our Hilux and Hiace kits are GMB kits, not Toyota parts. GMB bearings are made in Japan, our team confirms.
Is the N70 Hilux on the newer kit?
Our listings don't use the N70 name. They list the 2005 to 2015 Hilux by model code (KUN16R, KUN25R and KUN26R), so check your model code against the tables or send us your VIN.
