Oil seal sizes: how to measure a seal, and the extension housing and crankshaft seals we list

Our transmission extension housing seal is the Amaando 402965P, listed for auto and manual gearboxes in the Ford AU, BA, BF and FG Falcon (Sep 1998 to Dec 2014), the BF Fairmont and the NA to BA Fairlane. Any other oil seal is ordered by three sizes: shaft x housing bore x width, in millimetres or inches.

Driving one of those Fords? Check your series in the table below. Anything else: measure the old seal first.

All six are in our oil seals or mower parts collections. The front and rear crankshaft seals on the Holden V6 are different parts with different numbers, so don't order one for the other. On belt-driven engines, our timing belt kits list seals among their parts, so check the kit for your engine before buying a front crankshaft seal on its own.

Extension housing seal: which Fords our listing names

The extension housing is the rear of the transmission, and the 402965P is the oil seal that sits in it. Our listing names these cars:

The same seal covers auto and manual in our listing, and no size is printed on it. If you've had the old seal out, measure it (steps below) and send us the three numbers with your car's details, and we'll confirm the match. The listing also says it fits many other Falcon models, so send us your model and series if yours isn't above. We don't list an extension housing seal for any other make, or an extension housing gasket or bush.

Fitting follows Ford's procedure for your model in the workshop manual; we don't publish fitting steps. Without the manual and the tools it calls for, book a mechanic. Our listings say parts "should be fitted by a professional and fitted to vehicle specifications".

How an oil seal size is written

Seal makers write a radial shaft seal's size as three numbers: shaft diameter x housing bore diameter x seal width. A 45 x 62 x 10 seal runs on a 45 mm shaft, presses into a 62 mm bore and is 10 mm wide. Our Hilux rear crankshaft seal, 85 x 105 x 10, reads the same way: an 85 mm shaft, a 105 mm bore, 10 mm wide.

The first number is the shaft, not the hole in the rubber lip. The lip is made to grip the shaft under tension, so measuring the lip of an old seal gives you the wrong figure.

How to measure an old seal

  1. Look for a number. If the old seal or its packet still shows a part number, send it to us with your vehicle or machine.
  2. Measure the shaft the seal ran on, with vernier callipers. That's the first number.
  3. Measure the housing bore, or the outside diameter of the old seal. That's the second number.
  4. Measure the width of the seal's outer edge. That's the third.
  5. Note mm or inches. Many of our trailer seals are listed in inches. One inch is 25.4 mm.
  6. Note the type: rubber or bare metal on the outside, and whether it has a second (dust) lip. Match what came out.

Seal type codes: A, AS, B, BS, C and CS

Most radial oil seals are a rubber lip bonded to a metal case, with a garter spring behind the lip to keep it pressing on the shaft as the rubber ages. The common shapes follow the DIN 3760 and DIN 3761 standards:

Type Outside diameter Extra dust lip?
A Rubber covered No
AS Rubber covered Yes
B Bare metal case No
BS Bare metal case Yes
C Metal case with a second metal insert for stiffness No
CS Metal case, as C Yes

Source: seal makers' published standard types (see Sources), read 12 October 2026.

  • Rubber outside (A, AS) seals well against the housing and allows a rougher bore.
  • Metal outside (B, C) sits stiffly in the bore and resists popping out, but seals less well against the housing, so thin oils can creep past.
  • The S (dust lip) protects the main lip from dust and fine dirt. Seal makers recommend it for dirty conditions.

Our listings don't give these codes. Where they say anything, it's "metal" for some trailer seals, "two-piece" for others, and high temperature silicone for the rear crankshaft seals. Match the old seal's shape and size. Washing machine lip seal kit? We list a Fisher & Paykel lip seal kit for the 425006P and 425009P.

Oil seals aren't the same as the seals inside a sealed bearing. The 2RS or ZZ on a bearing number is its built-in seal or shield: see our bearing seal codes guide.

Trailer and caravan seals

Most of our trailer seals come in pairs or fours, sized as listed:

Seal (as listed) For (as listed) Size (as listed)
64607 metal oil seal 2 and 2.5 tonne caravan and trailer kits (HR30210) 60.3 x 89.96 x 12.7 mm
33940 Dexter 2 tonne kits, AU version 1.937 x 3.375 x 0.5 in
34040 Dexter 2 tonne kits, US version; Cruisemaster 10-VC kits 2.250 x 3.375 x 0.5 in
403149N metal seal Cruisemaster 2 tonne 10-VT kits 1.875 x 3.00 x 0.375 in
82130 2 tonne kits for Kimberley campers with disc brakes 48 x 85 x 13 mm
400805N Standard American import trailer kits 44.45 x 65 x 10 mm
402922N two-piece Parallel axles, L68149/10 1.65 x 2.258/2.48 x 0.51 in

Source: our seal and kit listings, read 12 October 2026. The 33940 is listed as 1.937 in on the seal-only listing and rounded to 1.93 in on the AU kit listings; the 34040 seal-only listings round 3.375 to 3.37.

For Holden trailer seals, the 401725N two-piece waterproof seals, the 1.5 tonne seal and the ModCon seal, our listings give different sizes in different places, and for the Ford trailer seal they give two different widths. Measure the old seal (shaft x bore x width) and send us the numbers before you order. Our trailer seal pairs and fours, and the caravan and Dexter kits they go in, are in the trailer collection.

Swivel hub seal kits

Our swivel hub seal kits hold axle seals plus the wipers, gaskets and other seals each listing names, for the Landcruiser 80 Series and HZJ105, Landcruiser 40, 60 and 70 Series, GQ Patrol and Maverick, and GU Patrol. The 80 Series kit is a front swivel hub kit; we don't list a rear axle seal kit for the 80 Series. Our GQ Patrol and 80 Series swivel hub guide compares the GQ and 80 Series kits.

Amaando seals

Amaando is the brand on most of our oil seals: the extension housing seal, the crankshaft seals, the trailer seals and the swivel hub seal kits. We list them by the seal's part number and the vehicle, so search our site for the number on your old seal.

Which Bearings Express seal fits

Questions people also ask

What is an extension housing seal?

The oil seal at the rear of the transmission, in the extension housing. Ours is the 402965P for the Fords in the table above.

Is the front crankshaft oil seal the same as the rear?

No. On the Holden 3.8 V6 we list, the front seal is 402578S and the rear is 403040S, sold separately.

Do you sell a trailer bearing and seal kit?

Yes: our trailer bearing kits include seals, and we sell the seals on their own too. The trailer wheel bearing guide shows which kit fits.
