Trailer bearing seal sizes: Holden, Ford, parallel, 2 tonne and Dexter

Trailer bearing seal sizes: Holden, Ford, parallel, 2 tonne and Dexter

Trailer seal size goes with the bearing set: our Ford (L68149) kits list a 1.687 x 2.328 in seal, about 42.8 x 59.1 mm, and our 2 or 2.5 tonne caravan kits a 60.3 x 89.96 mm seal. For a Holden (LM67048) hub, measure the old seal (inside x outside x width) and match it.

Read the number on your inner cone, find it in the table, and order the seal beside it. No number? Use the lookup by inside diameter below it.

The tonne figure doesn't pick the seal. Kits in our range with "2 tonne" in the name use at least six different seal sizes, so go by the bearing numbers, as our 2 tonne caravan bearing guide explains.

Lookup by inside diameter

Measured the old seal's inside? Find the nearest size:

  • 41.9 mm (1.65 in): two-piece 402922N, L68149 parallel.
  • 42.8 mm (1.687 in): Ford (slimline) kits and the L68149 parallel boat kits. The parallel road kits list 1.68 in (about 42.7 mm).
  • 44.45 mm: American import.
  • 46.1 mm (1.813 in): Trojan 2 tonne.
  • 47.6 mm (1 7/8 in): Cruisemaster 10-VT.
  • 48 mm: Kimberley campers with disc brakes.
  • 49.2 mm (1.937 in): Dexter AU, 33940.
  • 50.8 mm (2 in): ModCon standard.
  • 55 mm: 25590/25520 parallel.
  • 57.15 mm (2.25 in): Dexter US 34040 and Cruisemaster 10-VC (12.7 mm wide), or ModCon 22533737 (8.9 mm wide).
  • 60.3 mm: 2, 2.5 and 3 tonne HR30210 kits, and the Kimberley Karavan 60 mm kit.

Three of these sit within 1.6 mm of each other (47.6, 48 and 49.2 mm), so use vernier callipers, not a ruler. At 57.15 mm only the width tells the seals apart.

How to measure a trailer seal

  1. Inside diameter (ID). Measure across the hole with vernier callipers. If the seal is too damaged to measure, read the cone numbers and use the table, or send us the cone numbers and the hub bore.
  2. Outside diameter (OD). Measure across the outer edge. It matches the hub bore the seal sits in.
  3. Width. Measure the thickness of the seal.
  4. Write it as ID x OD x width, and note inches or millimetres. Read the inner cone number while the hub is apart: it's the quickest check on the seal.

If your measurements don't match a row, send us them and the cone numbers before you order.

What 28550 and 28600 mean

They're seal numbers from an axle maker's bearings catalogue. 28550 is its seal for Holden (LM) bearings and 28600 for Ford (SL, slimline) and L68149 parallel bearings. Both sit in a 59.10 mm hub bore. The same catalogue lists 30400 for its 1.5 tonne set and 64607 for its 2, 2.5 and 3 tonne sets.

The number alone doesn't give you the size to order, so measure your old seal as well. Our Holden or Ford guide shows how to tell the two axles apart.

Marine and boat trailer seals

In our marine kits the cones and cups are the same as in the standard kit; the seal is the difference. Our marine kits have a two-piece seal: a rubber seal with a stainless steel collar. Stainless resists corrosion, and the design keeps water out of the hub and grease in.

On our Ford kits the marine seal is listed at the same 1.687 x 2.328 in as the standard seal. A marine seal is fine on a road trailer or a caravan, and we recommend marine seals on anything that goes in the water.

Several of our loose seals are listed as metal seals: the 2 or 2.5 tonne, Cruisemaster and US Dexter pairs.

New seals with new bearings

A bearing maker's trailer service guide says to always replace the grease seals once they're removed. Fitting one means taking the hub off and setting the bearings up again, so follow your axle maker's procedure, or have a trailer service centre do it. Our listings say all parts should be fitted by a licensed professional to vehicle specifications.

Which Bearings Express seal fits

Every trailer bearing kit we sell includes seals. Buy seals on their own when the bearings are fine:

Questions people also ask

What size is a 28550 seal?

It's the Holden (LM) trailer seal. Measure your old seal (inside x outside x width) and match it to the listing; if it doesn't match, send us the measurements and your cone numbers before you order. We sell it as a pair, G28550.

What is a 28600 seal?

The 28600 is the Ford (slimline) and L68149 parallel seal. Our Ford kits list it at 1.687 in inside x 2.328 in outside.

What size seal does a 2 tonne caravan take?

It depends on the bearings. HR30210 and 15123 kits take 60.3 x 89.96 mm. Dexter kits take a 33940 (AU) or 34040 (US) seal. Read the cone numbers first.

Do you sell truck or semi-trailer seals?

Not in our trailer seal range, which covers the trailer, caravan and boat trailer kits above. Send us the seal number or measurements and we'll check.
